Pomology:Its status and importance

POMOLOGY: The word “Pomology”-  is derived from the Latin word ‘Pomum’ means fruit and ‘Logos’ means study.
The science and practice of fruit growing or technique of fruit production is called ‘Pomology’. e.g. Fruit gardening.

Botanically a fruit is a fertilized and developed ovary. But in some case fruit forms without fertilization and even without pollination. e.g. Parthenocarpic.

On the other hand, horticulturally a fruit can be said to plant fruits those after ripening eaten as raw rather than cooking i.e. as a dessert.
For example- Litchi, Jackfruit, Mango, Banana, Grape,Pomegranate etc.

Present Status of Pomology:
According to nutritionist fruit requirement is 85g-100g.
Availability of fruits per head is around 40g.
Fruit demand in Bangladesh is 24.53 lac MT and
production is 13.08 lac MT.

Importance of Pomology:

1. Important diet for human health development.

2. Different types of vitamins and minerals are found.

3. Medicinal value.

4. Increase food production per unit area.

5. Income generating per unit area.

6. Create employment opportunity.

7. Utilization of fellow land .

8. Create opportunity for agro based industries.

9. Sources for timber and fuel.

10. Create opportunity for earning foreign currency.
